Drawing Circles: A Convergence
Circulo de Dibujo and Steve Cope
>May 6-28, 2005 Projects Gallery

The concept of this month’s exhibition is ritual, both cultural and personal.  In the front room is a grouping of 100 drawings of circles by Steve Cope, all made within a rigid, formal structure, which frees up the artist’s creativity and challenges the artist to create 100 variations on a single theme.  This activity is viewed, in its most superficial, as an “exercise”; but at its essential, it is a ritual akin to prayer. In the Venezuelan city of Caracas, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, director and founder, Sofia Imber, created a weekly drawing circle in 1992.  Artists were invited to come to the museum when it was closed to the public.  They were encouraged to draw freely, exchange ideas and share the museum’s facilities. A large space was made available to them, as well as access to a model.  The work on display in the gallery is the result of one of these sessions, a selection made by 20 artists of the Circulo de Dibujo (drawing circle), sent to us as a statement of this common experience and universal language.
