Emerging Artists Annual Invitational

In the third edition of its annual season opener of emerging artists, Projects Gallery announces Fresh! 2010.  This year’s exhibition was co-curated by Gallery Director Helen Meyrick and recent Yale graduate school finalist and Fresh! 2008 alum artist Brooke Holloway.  Together these women have selected a diverse yet harmonious presentation, smaller in the number of artists than in past years.  This paring down allows the curators to give the showing more depth through size and quantity of works.

For the past three years, Fresh has picked from the annual graduating student shows a season-opening exhibition of both new talent and best promise.  Fresh! 2010 is no exception to this practice, once again bringing together disparate artists united not by imposed thematic or material concerns but as a chorus of individual voices.

Participants include:  Adrián Aguirre, Christy Bottie, Michelle Anne Clements, Scott Patrick Giblin, Katelyn Greth, Kelly A. Kozma, a.d. loveday, Maggie Mills, Reza Nahaie-Ghanad, Winston Sordoni and Laurie Werth.  These 11 artists were educated and/or live in the Philadelphia area.  More than half the size of last year’s presentation in number of artists, this smaller grouping will allow for a more complete appreciation of their artistic temperament.  Continuing with a diverse range of styles and media, these artists display a focus that is both personal and contemporary.  At a glance, there is a shared interest in both nature and social relationships.   However, even in those confines, each artist brings to the audience a sense of self.  There is an impression of urgency in the abstracted landscapes of Christy Bottie, Kelly A. Kozma, a.d. loveday, Winston Sordoni and Laurie Werth.  One feels the foreboding encroachment of man and politics in the images of Adrián Aguirre, Scott Patrick Giblin and Reza Nahaie-Ghanad.  Maggie Mills and Katelyn Greth take a more direct approach with their figurative representations documenting man’s condition both socially and corporeally.

In this presentation, Projects Gallery continues to engage the community in a dialog about expression and personal process while, in this showcasing, highlighting young talent.  In broadening the curatorial base, Projects Gallery taps into the current trends of artist-curated shows and presents a strong opening to the exhibition season.

Artist reception First Friday September 3 from 6 - 9 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.
