Recycled
February 2 - 25th Projects Gallery & Projects Room

Artists often reach for supplies outside of the typical artist box, using materials that have been discarded or that reflect their personal approach to image making. In this group exhibition, Projects Gallery brings together several local artists whose work specifically centers on this recycling or reuse of objects.

Margery Amdur has created a body of work based on paint-by-number kits, incorporating the pre-existing template into her layered images to produce intricate, dimensional encaustic paintings. Jim Brossy draws from his experience in construction to incorporate building materials into his assembled paintings, surprising the viewer with large hunks of metal, smashed tin cans, old clothing and other found materials to create his urban landscapes. Evoking a nostalgic sense of memory, Tom Judd uses archival books, wallpaper and maps as the backdrop for his sensual collage and oil renderings. Following his travels throughout the jungles and rainforests of the world, Ron Klein incorporates natural materials into his installations, giving discarded seedpods new artistic meaning through arrangement and the integration of man-made materials. Alex Queral reuses discarded phonebooks as his source material, carving detailed portraits from the impersonal list of names. Paul Santoleri re-images patterns in his intricate paintings on die-cut molds for boxes.

Works by Erin Endicott, Peter Gourfain, Florence Putterman and Caleb Weintraub will also be featured in this exhibition that explores not only artistic talent but conscious efforts to incorporate man’s refuse into new art objects.
